First Lines Book Display

On the YALSA Website this week, there was a great post by Morgan Doane about a Great First Lines YA Book Display.  She explained how she created the display by selecting YA titles that had weird/silly/attention-getting first lines.  She then created a template for posters that displayed the first line of each book next to a stack of the books.  I thought this was a great way to get young readers interested in a certain book by giving them a "teaser" to grab their attention.  Check out her post and my comment and leave your own suggestion for a great first line in the comments!

  1. I had great success getting teens to do this as well - they loved making contests for other teens. They would do first lines, main characters, romantic pairings...all from YA lit. It certainly made my life a bit easier, it got them reading even more, and the teens who didn't come to programs but did wander into the teen room would often roll their eyes but then secretly stop by for a hint sheet (if they wrote a book review for any book they would get hints) so that they could complete their contest form and enter for a prize. It's a great idea to share with other librarians, too, as Morgan suggested. In general, your blog is terrific. I like the range of topics, your writing style is accessible and polished, and I look forward to reading your posts this semester.
